5-Fluorooxindole (5-Fluoro-2-oxindole, CAS 56341-41-4) is a fluorinated oxindole building block supplied by Ossila at >98% purity. Its structure consists of a pyrrolidone (γ-lactam) ring fused to a benzene ring, carrying a fluorine atom at the 5-position. It serves as an intermediate for macromolecules and fluorescent dyes used in drug discovery, bioimaging, solar cells and OLEDs.
The 3-position can be functionalised by aldol condensation under basic conditions, extending the chromophore. Dyes built this way have been used as acceptors in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) reaching a power conversion efficiency of 6.35%, while oxindole-modified polymers have acted as donors alongside Y6 (BTP-4F) in non-fullerene polymer solar cells with efficiencies up to 8.27%.
In biomedical research, 5-fluorooxindole has been reported to alleviate inflammatory pain, enhance the analgesic effect of morphine and suppress oxidative stress and inflammatory responses linked to peripheral inflammation. Its derivatives are studied as α-glucosidase inhibitors for type 2 diabetes.
- Synthesis of donor and acceptor materials for dye-sensitized and non-fullerene polymer solar cells.
- Preparation of fluorescent dyes for bioimaging and cell-selective imaging.
- Building block for active pharmaceutical ingredients in drug discovery.
- Development of α-glucosidase inhibitor derivatives for type 2 diabetes research.
- Intermediate for materials used in OLEDs.
