Ossila 5-(Trifluoromethoxy)isatin (CAS 169037-23-4) is a fluorinated heterocyclic building block based on the indole scaffold. It carries two carbonyl groups at the 2- and 3-positions and a trifluoromethoxy group at the 5-position, and serves as an intermediate for organic molecules and metal complexes used in fluorescent dyes, OLEDs, solar cells and drug discovery.
The 3-position carbonyl reacts more readily than the amide carbonyl at the 2-position, so the molecule is easily functionalised by nucleophilic substitution. With chiral catalysts, this substitution can proceed enantioselectively, reaching up to 92% ee.
Reported uses include luminescent gold(I) complexes emitting at 400 nm, which also show cytotoxicity towards cancer cells with IC50 values as low as 0.28 μM. The compound has been used to modify rhodamine for selective Cr3+ detection, and isatin-decorated fullerene (C60) shows improved miscibility with P3HT in heterojunction organic solar cells. It is supplied as an orange to brown powder with a purity of 98%.
