5CzBN, or 2,3,4,5,6-penta(carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (CAS 1469700-24-0), is a light-blue emitter based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). It serves as a blue dopant in the emissive layer of high-efficiency TADF-OLED devices and is also known as 5CzCN.

The molecule carries five bulky, electron-donating carbazolyl groups on a single benzonitrile ring. Crowding between these groups makes the structure strongly sterically hindered. Its reported energy levels are HOMO 5.55 eV, LUMO 2.74 eV and T1 2.68 eV, with emission at 488 nm in toluene.

The material is offered unsublimed at >98% purity and sublimed at >99.0% purity (1H NMR). It is a yellow powder or crystalline solid. In reported blue devices with an mCBP host, it has reached a maximum EQE of up to 18.0%.

  • Light-blue dopant in the emissive layer of TADF-OLED devices.
  • Doping into an mCBP host to fabricate blue OLEDs with high external quantum efficiency.
  • Research on thermally activated delayed fluorescence and reverse intersystem crossing in donor–acceptor molecules.
  • Studies of emitter systems for all-fluorescent white OLEDs.
