5TCzBN, or 2,3,4,5,6-pentakis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (CAS 1469700-26-2), is a light-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter belonging to the carbazolyl benzonitrile (CBN) family. It serves as a blue dopant in TADF-OLED research and is supplied as sublimed material with purity above 99.0% by 1H NMR, appearing as a yellow powder or crystals.
Its tert-butyl groups act as a protective shell around the luminophore, keeping neighbouring molecules apart. This is thought to narrow the singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEST) and make reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) more efficient. In toluene the material absorbs at 420 nm and emits at 480 nm, with HOMO 5.75 eV, LUMO 2.74 eV and T1 2.60 eV.
Reported devices using 5TCzBN in mCBP or DMIC-TRZ hosts reached maximum external quantum efficiencies of 19.2% to 21.3%, power efficiencies up to 56.1 lm/W, and a half-life of 12,873h at 100cd/m2.
- Emissive dopant for sky-blue and blue TADF-OLED devices.
- Guest emitter in host matrices such as mCBP or DMIC-TRZ in vacuum-deposited OLED stacks.
- Research into reverse intersystem crossing and singlet–triplet splitting in carbazole-based TADF emitters.
- Studies of OLED efficiency and operational stability for blue emitters.
