6,9-bis(5-bromo-4-(2-butyloctyl)thiophen-2-yl)dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline, also known as DTQx-2BOThBr, is an electron-deficient quinoxaline-based monomer. It is used as an acceptor building block when preparing medium to wide bandgap oligomer and polymer donors for polymer solar cells, OFETs and perovskite solar cells.

The molecule is built around a fused dithieno[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinoxaline (DTQx) core, flanked on both sides by 5-bromo-4-(2-butyloctyl)thiophene groups. The terminal bromides make it straightforward to use in coupling reactions, while the bulky 2-butyloctyl side chains improve solubility and help promote film crystallinity and morphology in finished devices.

In quinoxaline, the two nitrogen atoms of the pyrazine ring give the unit a weak electron-accepting character, which suits it for D–A copolymers made with a range of donor units. Fusing thiophenes onto the benzene ring produces a flatter, more rigid DTQx framework that favours ordered π–π stacking and higher charge mobility in films. The material is supplied at >98% purity (HPLC) as a yellow to orange powder or crystals.

  • Synthesis of medium to wide bandgap D–A copolymer donors for polymer solar cells.
  • Preparation of semiconducting polymers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
  • Development of quinoxaline-based polymers for perovskite solar cells.
  • Building block for OLED and organic photovoltaic material synthesis via coupling reactions.
