6-Fluoroindole-2-carboxylic acid (CAS 3093-97-8) is an indole derivative carrying a fluorine atom at the 6-position and a carboxylic acid at the 2-position. It serves as a synthesis intermediate for metal complexes, macromolecules and bioactive compounds aimed at APIs, solar cells and OFETs.
Its secondary amine and carboxylic acid together form an α-amino acid moiety, so the molecule can exist as a zwitterion when the acid proton moves to the amine. The neutral and zwitterionic forms emit at 332 nm and 370 nm respectively, giving a broad fluorescence peak.
The carboxylic acid can coordinate copper(II) to give a binuclear complex that showed 90% inhibition of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines at 20 µM. Through a palladium-catalysed decarboxylative reaction, the compound can also be converted into triindoles, which act as OFET semiconductors with a field effect mobility of 0.03 cm2 V-1 S-1 and as hole transport layers in solar cells. It is supplied as a white to off-white powder.
- Building block for synthesising bioactive compounds and APIs in drug discovery.
- Ligand for preparing binuclear copper(II) complexes studied for anti-cancer activity.
- Precursor to triindoles via palladium-catalysed decarboxylative coupling.
- Synthesis of triindole semiconductors for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Preparation of hole transport layer materials for solar cells.
