6-Fluoroindole (6-Fluoro-1H-indole, CAS 399-51-9) is an indole carrying a fluorine atom at the 6-position, built from a pyrrole heterocycle fused to a benzene ring. Supplied as an off-white powder with >98% purity, it serves as a synthesis intermediate for bioactive molecules and polyindoles used in APIs, fluorine-labelling work, OLEDs, semiconductors and DSSCs.
The compound shows antimicrobial activity by disrupting pathogen quorum sensing, which suppresses the biofilm formation behind many infections. For medicinal chemistry, Bpin (pinacol boronate) groups can be introduced selectively at the 2-, 3-, 4-, 5- and 7-positions through iridium-catalysed borylation combined with bismuth-catalysed protodeboronation, enabling late-stage functionalisation and wider molecular libraries for drug discovery.
6-Fluoroindole is also used to label Escherichia coli cells so that protein-protein interactions can be examined in vitro by 19F NMR and 15N-1H HSQC NMR.
- Intermediate for the synthesis of bioactive compounds and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
- Building block for polyindoles and materials for OLEDs, semiconductors and DSSCs.
- Research on antimicrobial and antibiofilm agents acting on quorum sensing.
- Late-stage functionalisation via selective borylation to expand drug discovery libraries.
- Fluorine labelling of E. coli cells for protein-protein interaction studies by 19F NMR and 15N-1H HSQC NMR.
