6-Fluoropyridine-2-carbonitrile (CAS 3939-15-9), also known as 2-cyano-6-fluoropyridine, is a fluorinated heterocyclic building block used in drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry research and the preparation of metal-organic complexes. Its pyridine ring carries a nitrile group and a fluorine atom at the two positions ortho to the ring nitrogen, giving two reactive handles in a single small molecule.
The fluorine allows the pyridine unit to be coupled onto molecular scaffolds by nucleophilic aromatic substitution, while the nitrile can be converted with thiols or amines into thiazoles and imidazoles, heterocycles that appear widely in active pharmaceutical ingredients. As a ligand, it binds silver(I) to give a centrosymmetric dinuclear complex whose units are joined into a ladder-like structure by BF4- counteranions through Ag-F contacts.
Ossila supplies the compound at >97% purity as pale blue crystals with a melting point of 31 °C – 35 °C, in 1 g, 2 g and 5 g packs.
- Building block for introducing a fluoropyridine unit onto molecular scaffolds via nucleophilic aromatic substitution.
