6TIC, also called IXIC (CAS 2244414-53-5), is an n-type non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) for organic photovoltaics and polymer solar cell research. The molecule follows an acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A) design: an electron-rich fused terthieno[3,2-b]thiophene core flanked by two electron-withdrawing 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC) end groups.
Compared with 4TIC (IHIC), the two additional outward thieno[3,2-b]thiophene units give 6TIC a more planar backbone, which supports more efficient molecular packing and charge transport. Its longer effective conjugation length brings higher electron mobility and stronger intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), along with a higher-lying HOMO level and a slightly narrower bandgap. As a thin film, 6TIC absorbs strongly and broadly between 600 and 900 nm, with an onset at ~905 nm.
In a ternary polymer solar cell using PBTA-PS as donor with LA1 and 6TIC as binary acceptors, a PCE of 14.24% was reported, attributed to complementary absorption and co-crystallization. The material is supplied as a dark blue powder/crystals with purity ≥98% (1HNMR).
