9,10-Dibromoanthracene (CAS 523-27-3) is an anthracene derivative carrying bromine atoms at the 9 and 10 positions in a symmetrical arrangement. It serves as a synthetic intermediate for building semiconducting small molecules and polymers used in OLEDs, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic polymer solar cells.
The two bromine groups provide reactive handles for carbon-carbon bond formation, chiefly through Stille and Suzuki coupling, allowing the conjugated anthracene core to be extended. Elastic single crystals of the compound display an anisotropic Poisson effect, and their fluorescence shifts in the solid state when the crystals are bent or stretched.
As an example of its use, the derived emitter trans-9,10-bis(2-butoxyphenyl)anthracene (BBPA) reached a photoluminescence quantum yield of 89.5%. Doped into MBAn-(4)-F as the emission layer, BBPA gave deep-blue devices with an external quantum efficiency of 10.27% at CIE coordinates (0.15, 0.05). The material is supplied at >98% purity (1H NMR) as a yellow to orange powder or crystals.
