9,9′-Spirobifluorene (SBF, CAS 159-66-0) from Ossila is a white crystalline powder with a purity above 99% (HPLC), used as a core building block for organic electronic materials. Its structure consists of two fluorene units sharing a single sp3-hybridized spiro carbon, which holds the two π systems at right angles to each other.
This rigid, orthogonal geometry gives spiro compounds built on SBF useful properties such as high glass transition temperatures, good solubility and an amorphous character. The spiro architecture also helps prevent excimer formation in the solid state, a common problem with fluorescent dyes. Spirobifluorenes are valued for strong thermal and chemical stability, high quantum efficiencies and nondispersive ambipolar charge transport.
Unsubstituted SBF can also be polymerized directly with an FeCl3 mediator, through oxidative, Friedel-Crafts or combined routes, to give conjugated microporous organic polymers with surface areas of 940 – 1980 m2 g-1 and micropore volumes of 0.5 – 0.9 cm3 g-1.
- Synthesis intermediate for organic semiconductors and low band gap polymers.
- Building block for host and hole transport materials in OLEDs, including phosphorescent devices.
- Research on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Development of materials for organic photovoltaics.
- Preparation of conjugated microporous organic polymers via FeCl3-mediated polymerization.
