9CPA, or 3-(9H-Carbazol-9-yl)propanoic acid (CAS 6622-54-4), is a small self-assembled monolayer (SAM) molecule used as a hole transport or hole extraction layer in p-i-n perovskite solar cells and NFA-polymer organic solar cells. It sits between the electrode and the photoactive layer as a hole selective contact, helping both device performance and operational stability.
The molecule combines a carbazole terminal group, an ethyl spacer and a carboxylic acid anchoring head. Relative to 9CAA, its spacer is longer, enabling denser monolayer packing, while the chain remains short enough to improve energy alignment with perovskite or active layers for efficient hole extraction. In narrow bandgap (≈1.25 eV) Sn-Pb perovskite devices, a 9CPA interface gave a PCE of 22.1% and V OC of 0.89, versus 20.9% and 0.85 with 2PACz.
9CPA offers an alternative to PEDOT:PSS and can be deposited from solution at low concentration (1 mM) in solvents such as ethanol, methanol, IPA, DMF or THF. It is supplied as a white powder or crystals with purity above 98% (HPLC).
