Ossila M2438L1 is a grade of aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, CAS 308068-56-6) supplied as a black powder with purity above 96%. The tubes in each bundle run in one direction, parallel to the bundle axis. This grade has a diameter of 8 – 18 nm, a length of 9 – 14 μm and a specific surface area of 30 – 300 m2/g, and is produced by chemical vapor deposition.
The main use of aligned MWCNTs is as a reinforcing filler for stiffer polymer composites. Composites made with aligned tubes reach an effective modulus of 13.2 GPa, against 6.4 GPa for composites made with ordinary MWCNTs.
The nanotubes also act as a conductive filler. An epoxy loaded with only 0.01 wt% aligned MWCNTs changes from a purely dielectric material to one with a bulk conductivity of 10-3 S/m. The conductivity is anisotropic: parallel to the tube alignment it is nearly three orders of magnitude higher than in the perpendicular direction. Recommended dispersants are DI water, DMF, THF, ethanol and acetone.
- Reinforcing polymer composites to achieve high stiffness.
- Adding electrical conductivity to epoxy and other polymer composites as a conductive filler.
- Making composites with direction-dependent (anisotropic) electrical conductivity.
- Research on carbon nanomaterials, 1D materials and thin film electronics.
