Ossila Alq3 (M381) is tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum, CAS 2085-33-8, an organometallic small molecule supplied as a sublimed yellow-greenish powder with >99% purity. It serves in organic light-emitting diodes as both an electron-transport material and an emitting layer material, and is also classed for electron injection layers.
Its popularity in OLED research comes from a combination of high thermal stability, strong fluorescence quantum yield and good electron-transport ability. Alq3 was the material behind the first efficient low molecular weight OLED, reported by Tang in 1987, and it remains the most studied of the metaloquinolate family of electroluminescent materials.
In THF the compound absorbs at λ max 259 nm and fluoresces at λ max 512 nm, with HOMO and LUMO levels of 5.62 eV and 2.85 eV. Melting point by DSC onset is 415.4 °C. Published device stacks using Alq3 cover red, green and white emission, and it has also been reported as a solution-processed electron transport layer in P3HT:PCBM solar cells.
- Electron transport layer in vacuum-deposited OLED stacks.
- Green-emitting layer material in OLED devices.
- Host for dopants such as DCM in red-emitting OLEDs.
- Electron transport component in white OLED architectures.
- Solution-processed electron transport layer in P3HT:PCBM organic solar cells.
