Ossila Bathocuproine (BCP), product code B232, is 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (CAS 4733-39-5), a light yellow powder widely chosen as a hole-blocking layer material in organic electronics, including OLEDs, organic photovoltaics and perovskite solar cells. It is offered in a sublimed grade with purity above 99.5% and an unsublimed grade above 98.0%.
With a wide band gap and high electron affinity, BCP serves inside a device as an electron-transport layer and an exciton-blocking barrier, stopping excitons from diffusing towards the aluminium electrode. Its phenanthroline core carries methyl and phenyl groups, and the nitrogen atoms can form complexes with metal electrodes, which benefits charge transport and device stability.
In polymer organic solar cells, BCP is a common buffer layer placed between the acceptor and the cathode, where it can markedly raise power conversion efficiency. Studies have shown that a BCP buffer reduces nonradiative exciton recombination at the C60–Al interface and forms an Ohmic contact between the C60 film and the Al electrode. Approximate energy levels are HOMO ~ 6.4 eV and LUMO ~2.9 eV.
- Hole-blocking and exciton-blocking layer in OLED device stacks, including white, red and green emitting devices.
- Buffer layer between acceptor and cathode to improve power conversion efficiency in polymer organic solar cells.
- Electron-transport or electron-injection layer in organic electronic devices.
- Charge extraction interlayer in perovskite solar cells.
- Interlayer creating an Ohmic contact between C60 films and Al electrodes in photovoltaic devices.
- Material for OFET research.
