Ossila M2372A1 is a multi-layer graphene powder in which boron atoms are incorporated into the carbon lattice. It is intended for research on sensors, fuel cells, supercapacitors, energy storage and battery electrodes. The material has fewer than 10 layers, a thickness of 5 nm and a flake size of 5 – 10 μm, with a boron content of >11% and carbon content of 88.9%.
Because boron is less electronegative than carbon, it creates electron deficiency in graphene (a p-doping effect) while the sp2 hybridized, conjugated planar structure is kept. The resulting positive charge on the sheet favours oxygen adsorption and O–O bond cleavage, which gives boron-doped graphene strong catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It also helps nitrogen bind to the surface through B-N bonds, supporting electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia.
Boron-doped graphene is also studied as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries, where it is reported to offer large capacity, high rate capability and good cycling stability. The strong B-C bond keeps the mechanical properties of graphene, although thermal conductivity is much lower than in pristine graphene.
