BPhen, also known as bathophenanthroline or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (CAS 1662-01-7), is a sublimed organic semiconductor from Ossila with purity above 99.5%. Thanks to its wide energy gap and high ionization potential, it is a common choice for hole-blocking or exciton-blocking layers in OLEDs, organic photovoltaics and perovskite solar cells.
Its compact, rigid and planar phenanthroline core carries extended π-electrons and short hopping distances, which support electron transport. Electron mobility is about 5 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1, roughly two orders of magnitude above that of Alq3.
Doping with lithium turns BPhen into BPhen:Li, an effective electron-transport material frequently applied as an electron-injection layer. In this form it gives ohmic contact to any electrode, so work function matching does not need to be considered. The material is supplied as off-white to pale yellow crystals in 1 g and 5 g packs.
- Hole-blocking or exciton-blocking layers in OLED device stacks.
- Lithium-doped electron-injection layers providing ohmic contact to any electrode.
- Electron-transport layers in green, red, yellow, deep blue and white OLEDs.
- Charge-blocking and transport layers in organic photovoltaics.
- Interlayers in perovskite solar cell research.
