Ossila Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium (CMC, CAS 9004-32-4) is a biodegradable cellulose derivative used as a water-soluble binder for battery electrodes. Part of its hydroxyl groups are replaced by sodium carboxymethyl groups, which is what makes the polymer dissolve in water. Because electrodes can be processed without organic solvents, CMC offers a greener route to electrode fabrication.
In cathodes, CMC forms a solid, permeable interfacial film over the active material, helping to keep the electrode intact and limit growth in resistance. A sodium vanadium phosphate fluoride electrode made with CMC has been reported to deliver 75 mAh/g at 70 C and to run 3500 cycles at 30 C while retaining 79% of its capacity.
CMC can also be used to make composite electrolytes with sodium thioantimonate (NSS). A thin CMC coating around the NSS conducts sodium ions well while shielding it from the electrode, moisture and extreme potentials, improving battery cycling. Batch M2550A2 is a white to off-white powder with 99.61% purity, a degree of substitution of 0.93 and a molecular weight of ca. 500,000 Da.
