Ethylammonium iodide (EAI, CAS 506-58-1) is an alkylammonium halide salt used as a precursor material in the fabrication of perovskite solar cells and perovskite light-emitting diodes. Supplied by Ossila at 98% purity as a powder or crystals, it has the formula C2H8IN, a molecular weight of 173 g/mol and a melting point of 193 °C. It is also known as ethylamine hydroiodide or ethanamine hydriodide.
EAI plays a role comparable to methylammonium iodide, but its larger ethylammonium cation changes the electronic structure of the resulting perovskite. In (CH3CH2NH3)PbI3 the cation couples less strongly to the lead iodide framework, which widens the band-gap: this perovskite shows an optical band-gap of around 2.2 eV and a valence band position at 5.6 eV, compared with 1.5 eV and 5.4 eV for (CH3NH3)PbI3.
Published work has also examined ethylammonium iodide as an additive for preparing high-performance, high-durability perovskite photovoltaic devices. The material is offered in 10 g and 25 g pack sizes.
- Precursor for preparing ethylammonium lead iodide perovskite films for solar cells.
- Precursor material for perovskite light-emitting diodes.
- Additive in perovskite photovoltaic devices aimed at improved performance and durability.
- Research into wider band-gap perovskite structures through cation substitution.
