F4TCNQ (2,3,5,6-Tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, CAS 29261-33-4) is a strong electron acceptor widely used as a p-type dopant for organic semiconductors. Ossila supplies it as a sublimed grade with purity above 99%, appearing as a brown-yellow powder.
Its deep LUMO level of -5.2 eV sits close to the HOMO of many organic host materials, so electrons transfer readily from the host to the dopant, creating holes and raising conductivity. This makes it a common choice for doped hole-injection and hole-transport layers.
In published work, pin OLEDs with an F4TCNQ-doped m-MTDATA hole-transport layer reached 1000 cd/m2 at only 2.9 V. Adding F4TCNQ at 1 wt% to a PTAA hole-transport layer raised the best perovskite cell PCE from 14.8 to 17.5, and controlled doping of PCDTBT solar cells increased PCE from 6.41% to 7.94%. The material has also been reported as a p-type dopant for graphene.
- P-type doping of hole-transport layers in low-voltage pin OLEDs.
- Hole-injection layers in green, red and white OLED device stacks.
- Doping of PTAA hole-transport layers in perovskite solar cells.
- Molecular doping of polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells such as PCDTBT blends.
- P-type doping of graphene, including bilayer graphene band gap studies.
- Doping of conjugated polymers for thermoelectric (Seebeck coefficient) research.
