Ossila M551 is formamidinium iodide (FAI, CAS 879643-71-7), the iodide salt of formamidine, supplied as a white powder or crystals. This grade reaches >99.995% purity after double recrystallization in ethanol from 99.9% material, and it is offered in 5 g and 10 g packs.
FAI is mainly used to prepare formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3), an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite absorber. Compared with methylammonium lead iodide (around 1.57 eV), FAPbI3 has a narrower bandgap of 1.48 eV, placing it nearer the range that favours high solar conversion efficiency.
Published work shows FAPbI3 devices exceeding 20% efficiency when crystallization proceeds through intramolecular exchange of DMSO intercalated in PbI2 with FAI. Adding MAPbBr3 to FAPbI3 has been reported to stabilise the perovskite phase and lift efficiency above 18%. Beyond photovoltaics, the material is relevant to FETs and LEDs.
- Precursor for synthesising formamidinium lead iodide absorber layers in perovskite solar cells.
- Preparation of mixed-cation perovskites such as (FAPbI3)0.85(MAPbBr3)0.15 for higher device stability and efficiency.
- Fabrication of FAPbI3 films through DMSO intramolecular exchange with PbI2.
- Research on organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites for LEDs and OLEDs.
- Perovskite materials studies for field-effect transistors (FETs).

Film morphology and crystallinity of FAPbI3 are sensitive to humidity: reported efficiency was 16.6% at 2% relative humidity but fell to 8.6% at 40%, and the black α-phase can convert to the yellow δ-phase in humid air, so processing under controlled low humidity is advisable. Consult the MSDS before use.
