This Ossila graphite powder is a high purity (>99.9%) form of crystalline carbon (CAS 7782-42-5), supplied as a grey to black powder. Under standard conditions graphite is among the most stable forms of carbon, which makes it a dependable starting material for battery, coating and 2D materials research.
In graphite, carbon atoms form hexagonal sheets just one atom thick. These sp2 hybridized layers are held together only by weak van der Waals forces and π–π interactions, so they slide and cleave easily. This gives graphite its low hardness and slippery feel, in contrast to diamond with its sp3 bonding.
The powder combines refractoriness, high structural strength at high temperature, strong resistance to thermal shock, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low thermal expansion and good chemical resistance. Graphite shows both metallic and non-metallic behaviour and dissolves readily in iron. Its purity makes it well suited to liquid exfoliation into single or few-layer graphene nanosheets, and to intercalation, where cations such as Li+ are inserted between the graphite layers.
- Liquid exfoliation to produce single-layer or few-layer graphene nanosheets.
- Intercalation studies in which cations such as Li+ are inserted between graphite layers.
- Research on battery materials, including anode materials and zinc-carbon batteries.
- Formulation of conductive coatings, paints and lubricants.
- Fabrication of electrodes, crucibles and refractory components.
