Ossila M2586B1 is a spherical hard carbon powder (CAS 7440-44-0) used as an anode active material in lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery research. This grade is a black powder with a particle size of 9.6 µm, a tap density of 0.65 g/cm3 and a specific surface area of 2.9 m2/g.
Hard carbon is made of hexagonal carbon layers stacked in random orientations. This disordered stacking leaves many pores throughout the material, and these pores add to its ability to store ions. Ions are stored by intercalation, by adsorption, and by filling pores as ion clusters form.
Compared with conventional graphite anodes, hard carbon gives higher capacity, strong rate capability, good cycling stability and dependable performance at low temperatures. These properties make it a strong candidate for next-generation energy storage. Operando wide-angle neutron scattering studies have shown that the graphene layers in hard carbon expand during Na-ion insertion. Structural disorder develops mainly in the slope region and saturates in the plateau region.
- Anode active material for preparing sodium-ion battery electrodes.
- Anode material for lithium-ion battery research as an alternative to graphite.
- Studies of ion storage mechanisms, including intercalation, adsorption and pore filling.
- Development of battery cells for low-temperature operation.
