HATCN (1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile, HAT-CN, CAS 105598-27-4) is an organic semiconductor used mainly as a hole-injection layer (HIL) or charge-generation layer (CGL) in organic light-emitting diodes. Product code M792 is the unsublimed grade, with purity above 98.0%, supplied as a dark yellow powder or crystals.
HATCN belongs to the hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) family. Its molecules are rigid, flat, aromatic discs that are electron-deficient and stack strongly through π–π interactions. It has a HOMO of 7.5 eV and a LUMO of 4.4 eV, and thermogravimetric analysis shows 0.5% weight loss at 430 °C.
In solution-processed OLEDs, HAT-CN hole-injection layers have given external quantum, current and power efficiencies higher than or close to optimised PEDOT:PSS layers. It injects carriers efficiently and helps stop interfacial mixing and erosion while devices are built. This makes it a candidate replacement for PEDOT:PSS. It is also used in tandem, top-emitting and white OLED device stacks.
- Hole-injection layer in vacuum-deposited and solution-processed OLEDs.
- Charge-generation layer in tandem OLEDs, for example in HAT-CN/HAT-CN:TAPC/TAPC stacks.
- PEDOT:PSS-free hole-injection layer that limits interfacial mixing and erosion during fabrication.
- Buffer layer in inverted top-emitting OLEDs and in white and red micro-cavity OLED structures.
- Charge transport engineering in inverted perovskite quantum-dot light-emitting diodes.
