Ossila M2440A1 is an iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3) nanopowder supplied in the α-Fe2O3 phase, the polymorph found in nature as the mineral hematite. It is a dark red/brown powder made of spherical particles with an average size of 28 nm and a purity above 99.60%. Iron oxide, CAS 1309-37-1, is an abundant material used for pigments, catalysts and thermite, and it is increasingly studied as an anode material for energy storage.
α-Fe2O3 has a rhombohedral crystal structure. Below 260 K it behaves as an antiferromagnet, while between 260 K and 950 K (the Néel temperature) it shows weak ferromagnetism. In lithium-ion battery research, iron oxide anodes offer a high theoretical capacity of 924-1007 mAh/g during lithiation.
The material has also been explored in supercapacitors: a hybrid electrode combining α-Fe2O3 and MnO2 has been reported to run stably across a voltage window from −0.9 V to 0.9 V, delivering an energy density of 12.5 Wh/kg.
