Ossila M2439A2 is an iron (II,III) oxide (Fe3O4) nanopowder with a particle size of 30 – 50 nm and 99% purity. Also known as magnetite or black iron oxide (CAS 1317-61-9), this compound holds both iron (II) and iron (III) ions and can be written as FeO·Fe2O3. It is ferrimagnetic and appears as a dark orange/brown to black powder.
Fe3O4 has a long history as a pigment, a catalyst and an MRI contrast agent. In energy storage research, the nanopowder is combined with carbon-based materials to form composite anodes; such composites have reached a specific capacity of 980 mAh/g at a fast-charging rate of 4C while keeping outstanding cycling stability.
The material also serves in electrocatalysis. A Cu-FeOOH/Fe3O4 catalyst showed excellent stability and a low overpotential of 285 mV at 500 mA/cm2 for alkaline hydrogen evolution, with DFT calculations indicating a reduced energy barrier for water dissociation and hydrogen generation.
- Preparation of Fe3O4/carbon composite anodes for fast-charging lithium-ion batteries.
- Electrode material studies for supercapacitors.
- Development of catalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).
- Research into magnetic sealing, magnetic healthcare and nanomedicine.
- Use as a pigment and as a general catalyst material.
