LiTFSI, or lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide (CAS 90076-65-6), is a 99.99% purity hydrophilic lithium salt supplied by Ossila as a white powder or crystals. It raises the conductivity of various organic semiconductors and is widely chosen as a p-dopant for Spiro-OMeTAD, improving its conductivity and hole mobility in perovskite solar cells (PSCs).
In PSCs its role is thought to resemble that in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. Part of the lithium ions intercalate into TiO2 and shift its conduction band downward, giving a higher photocurrent. The remaining lithium ions react with oxygen and Spiro-OMeTAD to promote formation of oxidized Spiro-OMeTAD, which the bulky TFSI¯ anion then stabilizes as a counterion.
LiTFSI is also a well-studied electrolyte component for lithium-ion batteries. Its solubility in water reaches 21 molal, and concentrated solutions reduce the number of water molecules around the salt ions, lowering the water activity that drives decomposition and improving battery stability.
- p-Dopant for Spiro-OMeTAD hole transport layers in perovskite solar cells.
- Dopant for organic semiconductors in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells.
- Electrolyte salt for lithium-ion batteries, including concentrated water-in-salt electrolytes.
- Material for light-emitting diode research.
