This black lithium iron phosphate powder (LiFePO4, CAS 15365-14-7), also called lithium ferro phosphate or LFP, is a cathode active material for LFP lithium-ion batteries. Batch M2408A2 carries a carbon coating of 1.10%, a D50 particle size of 0.98 µm and a first-cycle capacity of 158.7 mAh/g at 98.4% first discharge efficiency.
LiFePO4 offers a specific energy of 90 – 170 Wh Kg-1, a volumetric energy density of 1200 kJ L-1, roughly 1500 cycles of cycling life and a nominal cell voltage of about 3.2 V vs. Li/Li+. The carbon layer compensates for the material's inherently low conductivity by providing electron pathways, reducing charge-transfer resistance and shortening lithium-ion diffusion distances, while also limiting particle growth and side reactions.
Safety is a key strength: the strong P–O covalent bond prevents oxygen release, and the exothermic peak is broad and flat at 250 – 360 °C with a heat release of only 147 J g-1. The olivine (triphylite) structure is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, and contains no cobalt, which makes it attractive for electric vehicle cells.
- Formulating cathodes for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) lithium-ion battery cells.
- Research on cathode materials for electric vehicle batteries where intrinsic safety is a priority.
- Studying how carbon, graphene or carbon nanotube modifications affect LiFePO4 capacity and rate performance.
- Developing cobalt-free cathode chemistries for long-cycle-life cells.
