Ossila M2408A2 is a carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, CAS 15365-14-7) powder, also called lithium ferro phosphate or LFP, supplied as a black powder for preparing cathodes in LFP batteries. The material offers a specific energy of 90 – 170 Wh Kg-1, a volumetric energy density of 1200 kJ L-1, around 1500 cycles of cyclic performance and a nominal cell voltage of ~3.2 V vs. Li/Li+.
The 1.10% carbon layer compensates for the low intrinsic conductivity of LiFePO4 by providing electron pathways, reducing charge-transfer resistance and shortening lithium-ion diffusion distances. It also limits particle growth, absorbs mechanical stress and shields the particles from side reactions, supporting capacity, cycling stability and thermal robustness. This batch shows a first-cycle capacity of 158.7 mAh/g with 98.4% first discharge efficiency.
LiFePO4 crystallises in the olivine (triphylite) structure, orthorhombic with space group Pnma. Its strong P–O covalent bonds prevent oxygen release, and its exothermic peak at 250 – 360 °C releases only 147 J g-1, giving high intrinsic safety. Being cobalt-free, low cost and long-lived, LFP is well suited to mass production for electric vehicles.
- Preparation of cathodes for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) lithium-ion batteries.
- Research on battery materials for electric vehicles where safety and long cycle life are priorities.
- Studies of carbon and graphene modification of LiFePO4 cathodes to improve capacity.
- Development of binder-free and carbon nanotube-modified LFP cathodes for high-rate performance.
