Ossila M2402A1 is lithium manganese oxide (LMO) powder, also called lithium manganate, with the formula LiMn2O4 and CAS number 12057-17-9. This black to grey spinel powder serves as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries and is regarded as a strong alternative to layered nickel or cobalt oxide cathodes.
LMO is valued for being inherently low in cost, abundant, more environmentally friendly and safer than many alternatives. It supports better ion transport and power capability, particularly at high rates, and offers a nominal voltage of 4.0 V, above that of the benchmark LiCoO2. This grade has a D50 particle size of 23 – 27 μm, a specific surface area of 0.4 – 1.0 m2/g and a coin cell capacity of about 105 mAh/g at 0.1 C.
Its spinel structure (space group Fd3m) places lithium in tetrahedral sites, with equal amounts of Mn3+ and Mn4+ in octahedral sites. Researchers should note that LMO can show capacity fading from Jahn–Teller distortion and transition metal dissolution, effects that are strongest at high current rates.
- Cathode active material for lithium-ion battery research and development.
- High-rate battery studies that benefit from improved ion transport and power capability.
- Coin cell fabrication and electrochemical testing of spinel cathodes.
- Research into capacity fading, Jahn–Teller distortion and manganese dissolution in LiMn2O4 cathodes.
