Ossila M2402A2 is a spinel lithium manganese oxide (LMO, LiMn2O4, CAS 12057-17-9) powder, also known as lithium manganate, intended for lithium-ion battery cathode research. This grade has an average particle size of D50: 14.8 μm, a specific surface area of 0.68 m2/g and a coin cell capacity of 115.9 mAh/g at 0.1 C.
LMO is studied as an alternative to layered nickel or cobalt oxide cathodes. It is valued for its intrinsically low cost, high abundance, environmental friendliness and better safety, and it can enhance ion transport and power capability, particularly at high rates. Its nominal voltage of 4.0 V is higher than that of the benchmark cathode LiCoO2.
The material adopts a spinel structure (space group Fd3m) in which equal amounts of Mn3+ and Mn4+ sit on octahedral sites and lithium occupies tetrahedral sites. Researchers should note that, like LiCoO2, LiMn2O4 can show capacity fading from structural transformation and transition metal dissolution, including Jahn–Teller distortion of Mn3+ at the discharged state, which is most pronounced at high current rates.
- Cathode active material for lithium-ion battery research and coin cell testing.
- Investigation of high-rate ion transport and power capability in spinel cathodes.
- Studies of capacity fading mechanisms such as Jahn–Teller distortion and manganese dissolution.
- Benchmarking low-cost, cobalt-free alternatives to layered Ni or Co oxide cathodes.
