m-MTDATA, or 4,4',4''-Tris[phenyl(m-tolyl)amino]triphenylamine (CAS 124729-98-2), is a triphenylamine derivative supplied as a sublimed powder for organic electronics. It is mainly used as the hole-injection buffer layer (HIL) in organic light-emitting diodes, where it helps holes pass from the ITO anode into the hole transporting layer (HTL).
Its very low solid-state ionization potential, together with its ability to form good-quality amorphous films, makes it well suited to this role and can help reduce the operating voltage of OLEDs. The material has a HOMO of 5.1 eV and a LUMO of 2.0 eV.
To raise the conductivity of the buffer layer, m-MTDATA is commonly p-doped with the strong electron acceptor F4-TCNQ, giving a typical stack of ITO/p-doped m-MTDATA/HTL. Reported devices built with m-MTDATA cover white, green, yellow, red and blue emission. Sublimation is used to reach ultra-pure grade material.
