Ossila magnesium oxide powder (MgO, CAS 1309-48-4) is a white, 99.9% pure metal oxide with a particle size of 30 – 50 nm. Its structure is a cubic lattice built from Mg2+ and O2- ions, and its wide bandgap of roughly 7.8 eV makes it useful as a hole-blocking layer in perovskite and dye-sensitized solar cells.
In perovskite devices, a thin MgO layer suppresses charge recombination as charges move from the perovskite toward the negative electrode, giving an 11% gain in power conversion efficiency. Compared with SnO2, MgO also provides a better growth surface for CsPbIBr2 perovskite, limiting the formation of δ-phase perovskite at the interface.
The powder is also applied in lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries, where it traps dissolved polysulfides and improves cell reversibility. Cells functionalized with MgO reach an initial discharge capacity of 980 mAh/g versus 729 mAh/g for control cells, and keep 78.3% of their capacity after 200 cycles. It is supplied in 100 g, 250 g and 500 g packs.
- Hole-blocking layers in perovskite solar cells to reduce charge recombination.
- Interfacial layers in dye-sensitized solar cells.
- Substrate layer for growing CsPbIBr2 perovskite with less interface δ-phase formation.
- Functional additive for trapping polysulfides in lithium sulfur batteries.
- Research on composites and other metal oxide materials.
