This manganese (IV) oxide powder (manganese dioxide, MnO2, CAS 1313-13-9) from Ossila is a black, 99% pure metal oxide with a particle size of ≤ 100 nm. Its tetravalent manganese makes it a staple cathode active material, valued for low cost, sustainability and high theoretical capacity.
The material is mainly used in the battery industry, especially for alkaline and lithium cells, and extensively in zinc-ion batteries. Zn/MnO2 cells are reported to offer high stability, a gravimetric capacity of 450 mAh/g, 90% capacity retention and an energy density of 150 Wh/kg, even at temperatures up to 55°C.
Beyond energy storage, MnO2 nanoparticles can scavenge reactive oxygen species by catalysing hydrogen peroxide breakdown. In perovskite devices, MnO2 can dope spiro-OMeTAD to oxidise the precursor solution quickly, reducing the drawbacks of air oxidation; the doped hole transport layer shows better morphology, conductivity and HOMO alignment, with external quantum efficiency rising from 83% to 87.6%.
- Cathode active material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.
- Electrode material for alkaline and lithium batteries.
- Dopant for rapid oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD hole transport layers in perovskite solar cells and photodetectors.
- Reactive oxygen species scavenging through catalytic breakdown of hydrogen peroxide.
- Research on low-cost electrodes for flow batteries and capacitive energy storage devices.
