n-Propylammonium iodide (PAI), CAS 14488-45-0, is an alkylammonium halide supplied as a powder or crystals with 98% purity. It is mainly added to perovskite precursor solutions to adjust key properties of the resulting perovskite, including band-gap, stability and electrical conductivity.
PAI acts as a bulkier organic cation in APbX3-type perovskites. Its longer propyl chain pushes the Pb–I structural units further apart and limits the directions in which the crystal can grow, so the material shifts from a 3D to a 2D crystalline structure.
These 2D structures are useful for building light-emitting diodes. When combined with the standard methylammonium framework, they can form 2D-3D hybrid structures that improve the stability and electronic behaviour of grain boundaries in thin films. The product is available in 5 g and 10 g packs.
