Ossila Ni-MWCNTs (M2412B1) are multi-walled carbon nanotubes carrying a coating of ferromagnetic nickel on their one-dimensional carbon framework. This combination gives the material good magnetic behaviour together with excellent electrical conductivity. Grade M2412B1 has a tube diameter of 18 – 28 nm, a length of 15 – 35 μm, a nickel content of 60% and a CNT content of 38%, with purity >98%. It is made by CVD and supplied as a black fibrous powder.
Thanks to high conductivity, strong chemical stability and a large number of active sites, nickel coated MWCNTs perform very well as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nickel impregnated MWCNTs have also been tested as a platinum-free counter electrode in dye sensitized solar cells, reaching a power-conversion efficiency of 9.72% against 8.85% for a Pt-based reference cell.
Further research areas include hydrogen storage, biosensors, electric-electronics, chemical energy, display technology, transistors and drug delivery.
