NMC523, also called NCM523, is a layered ternary lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2) supplied as a black to grey powder. It is widely studied as a cathode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, including cells aimed at electric vehicles, where it offers relatively high energy density, low cost, low toxicity, good cycle stability and safety.
Compared with LiCoO2, NMC523 delivers higher capacity at lower cost. Its reduced cobalt content lowers material cost, nickel raises capacity, and manganese strengthens the structure during charge and discharge. Reported reversible capacities are 160 mAh g-1 at 4.3 V and 190 mAh g-1 at 4.5 V (vs. Li/Li+).
Grade M2409A1 has a tap density of 2.50 g/cm3, a BET surface area of 0.33 m2/g and a D50 particle size of ~ 10 µm, with a first-cycle capacity of 154 mAh/g and first discharge efficiency of 87%. Published work shows that small additions of graphene (0.5 wt%) and Al2O3 (1.0 wt %) can markedly improve cycling stability, energy density and thermal safety.
