Ossila NMC523 (product code M2409A2) is a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide powder with the formula LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, also sold under the names NCM523 and NMC532. This layered ternary oxide is used as a cathode active material in lithium-ion battery research, particularly for cells aimed at electric vehicles, where it offers relatively high energy density, low toxicity, good cycle stability and safety.
Compared with LiCoO2, NMC523 delivers higher capacity at lower cost. Its reduced cobalt content lowers material cost, nickel raises capacity, and manganese stabilises the structure during charge and discharge. Reported reversible capacities are 160 mAh g-1 at 4.3 V and 190 mAh g-1 at 4.5 V (vs. Li/Li+).
The M2409A2 grade is a black to grey powder with a D50 particle size of 11.4 µm, tap density of 2.50 g/cm3, BET surface area of 0.24 m2/g, a first-cycle capacity of 164 mAh/g and a first discharge efficiency of 84.5%. Published work shows that small additions of graphene (0.5 wt%) and Al2O3 (1.0 wt %) can markedly improve cycling stability, energy density and thermal safety of NMC523 cells.
