NMC622 is a mid-nickel lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2) cathode powder, named for its 6:2:2 ratio of nickel, manganese and cobalt. It is intended for lithium-ion battery research and development. Compared with low-nickel NMC grades, it delivers more capacity at the same potential while offering better stability.
This grade is supplied as a grey to black, single-crystal, carbon-coated powder with a D50 particle size of 2.80 – 5.00, a tap density of ≥ 2.02 g/cm3, a specific capacity of ≥ 190 mAh/g and a first discharge efficiency of ≥ 88%.
Published work shows that an ultra-thin CeO2 coating suppresses the H2/H3 phase transition and reduces Ni/Li mixing, extending cycle life: after 50 cycles, ceria-coated NMC622 gained 14% capacity, whereas the uncoated material lost 18%. NMC622 has also shown good oxygen evolution reaction activity in 1 M KOH, with an overpotential of 280 mV at 100 mA·cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 42 mV·dec−1.
- Cathode active material for lithium-ion battery research and cell prototyping.
- Battery development for electric vehicles, power tools and grid energy storage.
- Studies of surface coatings such as CeO2 to improve cycling stability.
- Electrocatalyst research for the oxygen evolution reaction and water splitting.
