NMC811 is a nickel-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (CAS 179802-95-0) supplied as a black to grey polycrystalline powder for building and testing lithium-ion battery cathodes. Its combination of high specific energy density, good rate capability and relatively low material cost makes it a leading candidate for next-generation electric vehicle batteries.
The material offers a specific capacity of around ~200 mAh g-1 at an average discharge potential of ~3.8 V vs Li+/Li, giving roughly ~25% more energy density than LiCoO2. It crystallises in the α-NaFeO2 type layered oxide (R3m) structure, in which a close-packed oxygen lattice hosts alternating layers of lithium and transition metal ions sitting in octahedral sites.
Published work shows that electrochemical fluorination can improve cycling stability without changing bulk structure or morphology: ECF-NMC811 cathodes reached a first discharge capacity of 203.0 mA h g-1 at C/10 and kept ~98% of their capacity over 100 cycles. Particle size is ~8.0 – 13 µm with a BET surface area of ≤0.60 m2/g.
