Ossila Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF, CAS 24937-79-9) is a thermoplastic fluoropolymer supplied as a white powder for battery fabrication. Its backbone holds equal numbers of CF2 and CH2 groups; the CF2 units give the material its electrochemical and thermal stability, while the dipole between the two groups makes PVDF polar and strongly piezoelectric.
The polymer is best known as a binder for composite electrodes in lithium-ion cells, where intermolecular hydrogen bonding provides good adhesion. It is typically blended with conductive additives such as carbon black, graphene oxide or carbon nanotubes to improve thermal and electrical conductivity in the electrode. For lithium-sulfur cells, PVDF can be grafted with polyacrylic acid; a Li-S cell using a PVDF-graft-PAA cathode binder reached a reversible capacity of 644.1 mAh/g after 100 cycles.
PVDF is also used to build polymer electrolytes and separators. A PVDF, cellulose acetate and aluminum hydroxide electrolyte showed an ionic conductivity of 2.85 × 10-3 S/cm, and a PVDF/Al2O3 separator showed 55.8% porosity with 2.23 × 10-3 S/cm ionic conductivity. This grade has a molecular weight of 700k Da and a low volatile content of 0.03 %.
