(R)-(−)-3-Fluoropyrrolidine hydrochloride (CAS 136725-55-8) is the hydrochloride salt of a chiral pyrrolidine carrying a fluorine atom on its R-configured stereocentre. Supplied as a white to off-white powder with >98% purity, it serves as a fluorinated, heterocyclic and chiral building block for drug discovery, battery electrolytes and photonic materials.
For electrolyte work, the secondary amine can be alkylated and then quaternized with N-methyl bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide to give pyrrolidinium ionic liquids. These liquids have been reported with oxidation stability above 5.5 V vs Li+/Li and good cycling at high voltage up to 4.7 V.
In materials chemistry, a switchable perovskite complex made from CdCl2 and the methylated amine shows two phase transitions with switchable dielectric constants at 370 and 460 K. The (R)-3-fluoropyrrolidium MnBr3 ferroelectric, alongside its (S)-counterpart, displays circularly polarized luminescence. The compound has also been used in medicinal chemistry programmes targeting enzyme inhibitors.
- Synthesis of fluorinated pyrrolidinium ionic liquids for high-voltage Li-ion battery electrolytes.
- Preparation of selective enzyme inhibitors in drug discovery, such as phosphodiesterase 9A inhibitors.
- Construction of switchable perovskite metal complexes with dielectric phase transitions.
- Synthesis of enantiomorphic perovskite ferroelectrics showing circularly polarized luminescence.
- Use as a chiral fluorinated building block for active pharmaceutical ingredients.
