Ossila Silicon Carbide Powder (M2567A1) is a gray nanopowder of SiC, CAS 409-21-2, with a purity above 99% and a particle size of 50 – 60 nm. It is supplied for research into battery anodes, supercapacitor electrodes and wide-bandgap semiconductor devices.
Silicon carbide, also known as carborundum, combines very high hardness with a wide bandgap, which is why it has long served as an abrasive and is also used in electronic components such as diodes and field-effect transistors. In nanosized form it is being studied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, where silicon carbide nanoparticles have reached a reversible lithium insertion capacity of about 1200 mAh/g over 200 cycles.
As a supercapacitor electrode material, SiC offers a wide electrochemical stability window, strong mechanical properties and good tolerance of harsh conditions. Nanosized SiC combined with carbon has shown a capacitance of 734 μF/cm2 at 10 mV/s while keeping 86.6% of its capacitance after 20,000 cycles.
- Research on nanostructured anode active materials for lithium-ion batteries.
- Fabrication of electrodes for supercapacitors, including SiC-carbon composites.
- Studies of wide-bandgap semiconductor devices such as diodes, field-effect transistors and MOSFETs.
- Materials research related to LEDs.
- Use as a hard abrasive material.
