Ossila M2442A1 is a battery-grade silicon nanopowder (CAS 7440-21-3) with purity above 99.5% and an average particle size (D50) of 90 nm. This polycrystalline, dark brown powder is a semiconductor with a 1.12 eV bandgap and is supplied in 5 g and 10 g packs.
Its main research use is as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, where silicon offers a high theoretical capacity of 3579 mAh/g (Li15Si4). Silicon anodes give high energy density, restrict interphase growth and avoid Li dendrites in solid-state cells. Working at the nanoscale helps the material cope with the roughly 300% volume expansion that occurs on lithiation, supporting better structural integrity and longer cycle life.
A specific surface area of 45 – 80 m2/g aids lithium-ion diffusion and allows faster charging and discharging. The powder can be combined with conductive materials such as graphene or carbon nanotubes, or functionalized with vinylene carbonate, polyethylene oxide and other surface modifiers to improve conductivity, mechanical stability and performance.
- Anode active material for Li-ion battery research.
- Silicon-based anodes for solid-state batteries.
- Composite anodes with graphene or carbon nanotubes for improved conductivity and stability.
- Exploratory work on Li-S and Na-ion battery systems.
- Research into thermoelectric and photovoltaic devices.
- Photocatalysis and fuel cell studies.
