Single crystal NMC631 is a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNi0.6Mn0.3Co0.1O2, CAS 346417-97-8) cathode active material for lithium-ion battery research. As a mid-nickel composition, it sits between high-nickel and low-nickel NMC grades: it offers better thermal stability and longer cycle life than high-nickel materials, and higher energy density than low-nickel ones.
Instead of the agglomerated secondary particles typical of polycrystalline cathodes, this powder is made up of discrete, robust primary particles. Without internal grain boundaries, the particles are far less prone to microcracking as the cell cycles. The dark gray powder has a D50 particle size of 4.29 µm, a specific surface area of 0.84 m2/g and a tap density of 1.5 g/cm3.
The material also pairs well thermally with solid-state electrolytes such as LLZTO, keeping its structural phase intact at temperatures up to 1000 °C. In all-solid-state lithium batteries, it shows a 48% reduction in capacity loss, linked to more stable interfaces. First discharge capacity at 0.5C is at least 182.6 mAh/g, with first coulombic efficiency of at least 88%.
