Ossila M2013L4 is a grade of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT, CAS 308068-56-6) supplied as a black fibrous dry powder. Each nanotube is a hollow cylinder formed from a rolled graphene sheet with a wall just one atom thick, which places the material among one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials.
This grade has a diameter below 2 nm, a length of 5 – 35 μm, a surface area of 400 m2/g and a purity above 95%. Its one-dimensional structure gives it notable mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical behaviour, which is why it is studied on its own and also added to composite materials.
As supplied, the nanotubes do not dissolve. Small concentrations can be suspended with a surfactant and ultrasonic treatment. Recommended dispersants include DI water, DMF, THF, ethanol and acetone.
- Fundamental research into the mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties of one-dimensional carbon materials.
- Reinforcement or property enhancement in composite materials.
- Research on thin-film electronics and semiconducting nanomaterials.
- Preparation of surfactant-assisted nanotube dispersions for spectroscopic and microscopy characterisation.

To disperse the powder, mix the chosen solvent with a surfactant at a concentration below its critical micelle concentration. Add this mixture to the nanotubes, shake vigorously, then sonicate with an ultrasonic probe or bath. Keep sonication time and power under control, because excess sonication can damage the nanotubes and shorten them. Centrifugation separates individual tubes from bundles. For safety information, consult the MSDS.
