These single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs, CAS 308068-56-6) from Ossila are supplied as a dry, black fibrous powder. Each tube is a graphene sheet rolled into a hollow cylinder whose wall is a single atom thick, which places SWCNTs among the one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials.
Their structure and small dimensions give the material notable mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical behaviour, making it of interest both for studying the nanotubes themselves and for building composite materials. This grade, M2013L4, has a diameter below 2 nm, lengths of 5 – 35 μm, a surface area of 400 m2/g and purity above 95%.
As produced, SWCNTs do not dissolve, but small concentrations can be suspended in DI water, DMF, THF, ethanol or acetone with the help of surfactants and ultrasonic treatment, followed by centrifugation to remove bundles.
- Fundamental research into the mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties of one-dimensional carbon materials.
- Reinforcing or functional filler in composite materials.
- Material studies related to thin-film electronics.
- Preparation of surfactant-stabilised nanotube dispersions for characterisation such as Raman spectroscopy and TEM.
