Spiro-OMeTAD, also known as Spiro-MeOTAD (CAS 207739-72-8), is a spirobifluorene-based hole transport layer (HTL) material and one of the most widely studied options for organic-inorganic electronic devices. Product code M292 is the sublimed grade, with a purity above 99.5% by HPLC. Sublimation is used to produce ultra-pure chemicals.
Its spiro-linked structure gives the molecule a high glass transition temperature and good morphological stability, while keeping it easy to process and preserving useful electronic properties. The HOMO sits at -5.0 eV and the LUMO at -2.05 eV, with an optical band gap of 2.95 eV. The material is a white to pale yellow powder with a melting point of approximately 240 °C and shows 0.5% weight loss above 360 °C by TGA.
Researchers use Spiro-OMeTAD in perovskite solar cells, solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells, OLEDs and polymer-based organic solar cells. A common processing route spin-coats it from chlorobenzene with dopants such as 4-tert-butylpyridine, LiTFSI and a cobalt(III) complex.
