Ossila Sulfur-Carbon Composite Powder (M2554A1) is a cathode active material for lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. It is a black powder containing 69 ± 1% sulfur and 30 ± 1% carbon by TGA, with a purity above 99.45%. Li–S chemistry is attractive because of its very high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh/kg and specific capacity of 1672 mAh/g.
The composite is made by grinding sulfur with carbon powder and then melt-diffusing the mixture at 155°C for 12 hours. In the finished material the carbon serves as the host, supplying a conductive surface and pathways for ions and electrons, which matters most when sulfur loading is high and electrodes are thick. The structure also improves electrolyte penetration, so lithium ions can react quickly with the sulfur.
Sulfur-carbon composites with sulfur contents between 40-70% have been reported to reach discharge capacities of 500-900 mAh/g, retaining 50-70% of capacity over 50-150 cycles. The powder is sieved to 80 mesh and is supplied in 5 g, 10 g and 25 g packs.
