TAZ, or 3-(biphenyl-4-yl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole, is a triazole-based organic semiconductor supplied by Ossila in sublimed grade with purity above 99.0%. It is chiefly employed in blue phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs), where it acts as both an electron-transport layer (ETL) and a hole-blocking layer (HBL).
Its high triplet energy (ET: 2.7 eV) keeps triplet excitons confined inside the emissive layer, while its deep energy levels (HOMO 6.3 eV, LUMO 2.7 eV) help stop holes from leaking out and ease electron injection and transport. Together these properties support better device performance.
The material is a white powder or crystalline solid with a melting point of 231 – 235 °C. In chloroform it shows absorption at 280 nm and fluorescence emission at 372 nm. Published devices using TAZ include green, blue and white OLEDs, with reported maximum EQE values up to 38.4% in a white device.
- Electron-transport layer in blue phosphorescent OLEDs.
- Hole-blocking layer that confines triplet excitons within the emissive layer.
- Electron-injection layer material in organic electronic devices.
- Phosphorescent host material, including as a host for dopants in white OLED stacks.
- Research on green, blue and white OLED device architectures.
